Goodreads Summary

Barrett: As a former pro football star, I’m used to playing the field. After injuries cut my NFL career short, my second act as a broadcaster ended on live television when a hot mic picked up a little verbal . . . indiscretion. But this latest publicity stunt might just land me back on top—much to the chagrin of Catarina Everhart, the prissy, beautiful journalist who’s been assigned to date a bad boy (i.e., me) and write about it. Catarina swears I’ll never touch her, let alone kiss those full lips of hers. Based on our chemistry, I’m not buying it. . . .

Catarina: Barrett Fox seems to be doing everything in his power to make me hate him. The cocky egomaniac is infamous for his bad behavior, and now, thanks to my boss’s harebrained schemes, he’s apparently my problem. As one fake date leads to another, I start to see a different side of Barrett. He’s close with his family. He does volunteer work. And, okay, he kisses like a dream. Am I really dating Barrett Fox? Or is he playing me? Because suddenly I’m risking my reputation—and my heart.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Rumor Has It. The title of the book that has NOTHING to do with the story itself. There was no rumor floating around. I don’t really understand the title of this book. Sorry, I’ll jump down off my soap box.

Anyway, Catarina Everhart is a journalist. She’s been assigned a story to work with Barrett Fox, former NFL player and analyst who was fired from his job over an incredibly insensitive remark he was caught making on his mic. He’s looking to improve his image and agrees to “date” Catarina and write about it for an article.

Cat (I’m shortening because I don’t feel like spelling out every time:) is not very likable at the beginning of the story. She’s dating a guy named Northrop – they have been dating for 8 months and are in a “dry spell”. Who is in a dry spell after 8 months of dating and tolerates that? I really didn’t understand that part of the story AT ALL.

Barrett is much more likable, despite the stupid remark that got him fired. He was funny and sweet. Cat was more stuck up and judgmental. This is a SLOW burn for sure, but Cat did become more likable as the story progressed.

The synopsis is also very misleading. Barrett isn’t really a bad boy – he made a bad decision. I felt this was a little misleading. I didn’t really like the storyline surrounding his brother either.

The drama at the end was not very believable. And the way Cat reacted wasn’t either. I won’t spoil it, but if that had been done to me, I would have reacted very differently.

And, to top it off, there was no epilogue.

This book wasn’t awful, it just wasn’t great.
