I don’t generally read college romances, and to be honest, I didn’t realize this was one. Based on the description, I thought it was about an NFL player. It didn’t really matter, though, because this book was great!

Delaney is a nerd – she loves cats, Star Wars and books. She goes to a party with her roommate her freshman year of college and gets kissed by Maverick Monroe – star linebacker of the football team. Mav tells Delaney that legend has it you’ll never forget your first kiss at a college party – it’s legendary. They don’t forget each other.

Fast forward two years, and Delaney is fresh off a breakup with the teams kicker, Alex.  He cheated on her with the character that caused me NOT to give this book 5 stars – Martha/Muffin. She was a totally unbelievable character and unfortunately popped up throughout the entire book. She was truly awful and took away from the story, in my opinion.

Anyway, Delaney and Maverick meet up again, and Maverick has decided he’s not going to let Delaney get away again. He shows up places when she doesn’t expect it. He joins a salsa dancing class with her. He likes that she’s a nerd.

Maverick Monroe is an amazingly written character. Yes, he’s the star of the football team, but there is SO much more to him than just a typical jock. He was one of the most deeply rich characters I’ve read in a long time. He was sweet and kind and a devoted family person. I won’t give a lot away because Maverick’s backstory is both beautiful and heartbreaking, but this story is so worth the read.

While I adored Maverick, I liked Delaney. She had some pretty low self-esteem and it was hard for her to believe that Maverick would be interested in her.  She was funny and sweet, and I loved her by the end of the book, but it took a little while to warm up to her.

This is a really fast read – I read in one day, but it’s a really good story and I would highly recommend it.
