Book Review – When I’m With You by Harper Sloan

when i'm with youNate:

It’s nearly impossible to be surrounded by love but not understand it. My parents, my sister, and just about everyone around us has no trouble accepting that love. To give your trust to someone else and believe they would die before hurting you. I’ve witnessed it—I’ve seen the power of it—but I’ve also seen the pain. Because for me, I’ve only loved someone I could never have, and my biggest fear is that by giving her my love, all I would do is ruin her. I should have tried harder, but I’m not sure I can because I only feel complete when I’m with her.

The only time I feel like I belong is when he’s near. His infectious smile warms me straight to my bones. Any insecurities I have vanish with just a wink from him. A sliver of his attention makes me feel invincible. But all it took was one drunken night of truths for me to lose everything I had begun to crave. Now, I’m not sure how to move on because I only feel complete when I’m with him.

He said I was too young. I said he was perfect. He said our families wouldn’t understand. I said we could weather any storm. He said he would ruin me. And he was right.

Book 3 in the Hope Town series is the story of Nate Reid (Axel and Izzy’s son) and Emberlyn Locke (Maddox’s daughter).  Ember has been in love with Nate forever.  On the night of her high school graduation, Ember confesses her love to Nate, and he tells her he doesn’t feel that way about her, even though he really does.

Fast forward three years and Ember is about to turn 21 and Nate is opening his new club Dirty.  Ember’s in a relationship with a guy, Levi, that she’s not too interested in, and her sister and friends take her to Dirty for her 21st birthday.  At that point, Nate decides that Ember is his, and goes all alpha male on her.

At the same time, Ember has some weird stuff happening to her.  Her bird house breaks, she has a branch come through her window and a house fire.  All things send her running to Nate.

The reasons for her issues were super predictable.  You’ll figure it out right away.  The end of the book and it’s four epilogues were really good.

I loved Nate.  I understand why he pushed Ember away at the beginning.  He’s 7 years older than her.  She’s not affected by that, but he has an issue with it.  He eventually comes to terms with it when he realizes she is meant to be with him.

I love seeing the Corps Security guys in these books.  Axel was the first, and Nate’s dad.  I will continue to read (or listen, in this case) to these books.

Happy reading.
