Book Review – Make it a Double by Sawyer Bennett

Goodreads Summary

Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Sensual couple

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

4 out of 5 stars

This book is so much better than the first one, for a few reasons, but the main reason is Alyssa, the heroine of this book.

Make it a Double is the story of Alyssa and Brody, Hunter’s (book 1) identical twin, who was recently released from prison after 5 years.  We finally learn why Brody went to prison, and it was not what I expected at all.  Brody is having a hard time adjusting to life on the outside, and he has to do community service as part of his parole, and Alyssa has the perfect opportunity – to work at her no-kill animal shelter.

Alyssa grew up in a wealthy family, but hates it.  She got a huge amount of money and used it to start her shelter, which she runs on her own, with the help of volunteers.  Brody decided that Alyssa is a “rich bitch” and tells her so, to her face.  Alyssa comes to Hunter’s house for help, but only Brody is there, which is their beginning.

Brody quickly realizes that he was dead wrong about Alyssa – she’s not the rich bitch he thought she was.  Alyssa also has an ex who is kind of stalking her (which I found annoying) and her rich bitch mother shows up (I also found that annoying).

I read this whole book in less than 24 hours, so that should tell you I was sucked in and really enjoyed it.  There was an animal scene that actually made me tear up – I’m a huge animal lover too.  Alyssa was a much better female lead than Gabby, but Gabby is better now and has grown on me.  Seeing Brody break free from his own personal prison was a nice change too.  Overall, a solid read that I would recommend.

Happy reading.
