Book Review – The Mother Road by Meghan Quinn

Goodreads Summary

Never in a million years would I have pictured myself as an axe-wielding, dragon lady, chopping up multi-colored flannel shirts into my very own plaid mulch. But here I am, chopping away my frustrations.mother road

It all started when my brother, Paul, convinced me to go on one last family road trip across the Mother Road with him and my dad.. Just like old times, right? Wrong. What Paul fails to mention is his best man, Porter, will be joining us, who just so happens to be my childhood crush and the man who broke my heart four years ago.

What is supposed to be a fun, family bonding experience across Route 66 turns into a war of pranks, awkward moments and bathrooms full of dirty flannel shirts and day old beard clippings. Paul’s know-it-all attitude and Porter’s devilish charm brings me to the brink of my sanity on my seven day trek across the United States with three bearded men in a small 1980’s RV.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

I freaking loved this book!  It’s been sitting on my carousel for a while now, and I finally decided to give it a go.  I’m so glad I did.

The Mother Road is the story of Marley, Porter, Paul and Bernie.  Paul is getting married, and Paul and Bernie drive across the country to pick Marley up in their 1980’s RV named Tacy.  Before their mother died, the family was going to take a trip across the country on Route 66 – so they decide to do this as a pre-wedding gift to Paul.

Paul neglects to inform Marley that his best friend, Porter, is joining the trip.  What Paul and Bernie don’t know is that Porter broke Marley’s heart four years earlier.

This book was laugh out loud funny.  I live with three males, so I know what it can be like, so I was able to appreciate this book more because of that.  Paul cracked me up; he was such a nerd and drama king.  I loved that this book was told in the first person, alternating between Marley and Porter.  Bernie, the dad, was hilarious as well.

This was a short, fun read and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Happy reading.
